CBR Plate Test

Measure the strength of ground and subgrade materials with our CBR testing method.

California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing is a widely recognised method for evaluating the suitability of construction materials. In road and pavement design, it measures the strength of the subgrade against pressure. Plate load testing is a method of CBR testing which applies to a wider coverage area. It facilitates testing for both cohesive and granular materials.

During a CBR test, pressure is applied to a sample of the subgrade to indicate the material’s strength. The plate load aspect then measures the response of the subgrade to the applied pressure, providing valuable insights into its load bearing capacity and overall suitability.

This comprehensive approach is essential for ensuring the durability and longevity of infrastructure projects.

The CBR Test Process

The CBR plate test is carried out on site to determine the load bearing capacity of soil. During the process, we:

  1. Level and clear the test area to ensure uniformity.
  2. Position the CBR test plate on the prepared test area.
  3. Apply a known load incrementally onto the plate using a hydraulic jack.
  4. Record the penetration depth of the plate into the soil at each load increment.
  5. Calculate the CBR value using the formula relating the applied load to the penetration of the plate.
  6. Compile a comprehensive report with details of our testing procedures and findings.

F.A.Q.

Rapid and fuss-free, our CBR tests measure the resilience of your construction materials.
What are the key differences between plate load tests & CBR tests?
Plate load tests are a method of CBR testing. CBR tests measure the strength of the subgrade against pressure, and plate load tests provide a broader perspective by assessing the response of the subgrade material to applied pressure across a larger surface area.
How are CBR tests used in construction projects?
CBR tests are used to establish the resilience of soils and subgrade materials. They help us optimise pavement design, construction and maintenance strategies to ensure the longevity of infrastructure projects.
When should CBR tests be performed?
CBR tests are typically performed during the design phase of construction projects to help engineers make informed decisions and avoid costly errors.
