LWD Tests

Uncover crucial insights into the properties of your construction materials with our expert lab testing services.

Light-weight deflectometer (LWD) tests are an important tool for examining the compaction and load-bearing capacity of granular layers and unbound pavement layers. They are commonly used in road construction and maintenance to ensure that infrastructure meets safety and performance standards.

During our LWD tests, we place a small, portable device on the exterior of the pavement layer being tested. This applies a dynamic load to the surface, which measures and records deflection. From this, we can assess the strength of the soil to make sure that it can withstand expected loads over time.

The LWD Test Process

Our efficient LWD evaluation is designed to evaluate the strength and weaknesses of your granular materials. During the process, we:

  1. Clear any debris or obstacles to establish a flat and stable surface for testing.
  2. Position the LWD device over the testing site. We then apply a load to the pavement through a circular plate on the bottom of the device.
  3. Measure the vertical deflection of the pavement surface with sensors. This deflection is measured in millimetres.
  4. Record the deflection measurements and store them for further investigation.
  5. Analyse the recorded data to assess the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the pavement layers.
  6. Compile a comprehensive report with details of our testing procedures and findings.

F.A.Q.

Our LWD tests provide rapid results, helping you make quick decisions throughout your construction process.
How does an LWD test work?
During an LWD test, a circular plate on the bottom of an LWD device applies a load to the pavement surface. Sensors in the device measure the vertical deflection of the pavement in response to the applied load, which tells us information about the pavement’s structural properties.
What information does an LWD test provide?
LWD tests help us decipher the stiffness, strength and load-bearing capacity of pavement layers. This information will help you make informed decisions regarding pavement design construction, maintenance and use.
When are LWD tests required in pavement engineering?
LWD tests are used at various stages of pavement engineering. They are used to assess the condition of existing pavements, evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatments, optimise pavement designs and ensure compliance with performance specifications.
