LWD Tests
Uncover crucial insights into the properties of your construction materials with our expert lab testing services.
Light-weight deflectometer (LWD) tests are an important tool for examining the compaction and load-bearing capacity of granular layers and unbound pavement layers. They are commonly used in road construction and maintenance to ensure that infrastructure meets safety and performance standards.
During our LWD tests, we place a small, portable device on the exterior of the pavement layer being tested. This applies a dynamic load to the surface, which measures and records deflection. From this, we can assess the strength of the soil to make sure that it can withstand expected loads over time.

The LWD Test Process
- Clear any debris or obstacles to establish a flat and stable surface for testing.
- Position the LWD device over the testing site. We then apply a load to the pavement through a circular plate on the bottom of the device.
- Measure the vertical deflection of the pavement surface with sensors. This deflection is measured in millimetres.
- Record the deflection measurements and store them for further investigation.
- Analyse the recorded data to assess the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the pavement layers.
- Compile a comprehensive report with details of our testing procedures and findings.
